Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) PowerFlex 525 fault F013: Ground Fault
Fault F013 on a PowerFlex 525 is Ground Fault: the drive detected a current path to earth ground at one or more of its output terminals. Rockwell’s action is to check the motor and external wiring to the drive output terminals for a grounded condition.

When it happens
- At start, the moment the output switches on
- Running, often after washdown, condensation or cable movement
- Intermittent with temperature or humidity
Likely causes and checks
1Motor winding insulation breakdown
- Points to it
- Trips at start every time; motor is old, wet or has overheated.
- Check
- With the motor disconnected from the drive, megger each phase to ground at the motor terminals.
2Damaged motor cable or wet junction box
- Points to it
- Trips after washdown or rain, or when the cable moves with the machine.
- Check
- Megger the cable on its own (both ends disconnected) and inspect glands, conduit and junction boxes for water.
3Wiring error at the output terminals
- Points to it
- Trips immediately after installation or a drive swap.
- Check
- Check the output terminal wiring and the ground conductor routing against the manual’s wiring section.
Telling it apart
- F013 is Type 1, but the manual notes it is auto-reset only once and ignores A541 [Auto Rstrt Tries]. F038/F039/F040 (Phase U/V/W to Gnd) are Type 2 and name the phase, and the manual says to replace the drive if they cannot be cleared.
- A ground fault can also produce F012 HW OverCurrent; if both appear, test insulation first.
- A megger reading on a cable still connected to the drive is not valid and can damage the drive; disconnect first.
Evidence to collect
- b007–b009 fault codes in order
- Insulation results for motor and cable, measured separately
- Environmental conditions at the trip (washdown, humidity)
- Cable length and routing
Work on fuel trains, burners, pressure vessels and electrical equipment must be done by qualified personnel following the manufacturer’s documentation and local codes. Never bypass a safety device or interlock.
