FANUC 0i-F DS0300 after power-up, what to check first?
I'm getting a DS0300 APC ALARM: NEED REF RETURN on my FANUC 0i-F controller right after power-up. This is a new fault, and I haven't done any recent maintenance on the machine. What should I check first?
The DS0300 alarm on a FANUC 0i-F indicates that the absolute position detector needs its zero position reset because the link between the reference position and the encoder's counter has been lost. This typically happens after the encoder loses its absolute data, such as when the battery runs flat or is replaced. It may also occur after replacing a motor, encoder, or cable, or during the initial commissioning of an axis.
Likely causes and checks
1Absolute Pulsecoder battery ran flat or was replaced with power off
- Points to it
- The absolute position detector's battery voltage has dropped, or the battery was replaced while the machine was powered off, causing the loss of absolute position data.
- Check
- Check the alarm history for DS0306, DS0307, or DS0308, which indicate battery issues. Read DGN 3019. If confirmed, replace the battery with the machine powered on according to FANUC's procedure, then set the reference position.
2Battery cable or encoder cable disconnected
- Points to it
- The connection to the battery or the Pulsecoder cable for the affected axis has been lost, leading to a loss of absolute position data.
- Check
- Inspect the battery and Pulsecoder cable connections for the specific axis experiencing the alarm. This is more likely if only one axis is affected and work was recently done near the motor or cable.
3Motor or encoder replaced
- Points to it
- A motor or Pulsecoder replacement necessitates re-establishing the reference position for the absolute position detector.
- Check
- If a motor or Pulsecoder was recently replaced, perform the reference position return procedure as specified by the machine builder. Also, confirm grid shift and stroke limits.
4Encoder communication fault
- Points to it
- A communication error with the absolute position detector prevents the correct machine position from being obtained.
- Check
- Look for accompanying SV0301–SV0307 APC alarms or other Pulsecoder alarms. These indicate issues with the detector, cable, or servo interface module, and should be addressed first.
Next check: Given no recent maintenance, the most common cause is a flat battery. Check the alarm history for DS0306, DS0307, or DS0308, and read DGN 3019 to confirm battery status. If indicated, replace the battery with the machine powered on and then set the reference position.
