FANUC 0i-F SP9012 OVERCURRENT POWER CIRCUIT on spindle start, what to check?

Question

I'm getting a SP9012 OVERCURRENT POWER CIRCUIT alarm on our FANUC 0i-F CNC when the spindle starts or accelerates. The spindle amplifier shows alarm 12. What should I check first?

The SP9012 (OVERCURRENT POWER CIRCUIT) alarm on a FANUC 0i-F CNC indicates an abnormally high spindle motor current. This fault often occurs at spindle start or acceleration, especially after a motor or amplifier change, or intermittently in wet conditions. The primary causes are typically related to motor or cable insulation, incorrect spindle parameters, or a faulty spindle amplifier.

Likely causes and checks

1Motor or cable insulation breakdown

Points to it
Coolant ingress, damaged cables, or general wear can lead to insulation breakdown in the spindle motor or its power cable, causing current leakage and triggering the overcurrent alarm. This issue may worsen in wet conditions.
Check
Disconnect the spindle motor and power cable from the amplifier and perform an insulation test on both components. Look for signs of coolant ingress or cable damage.

2Spindle parameters do not match the motor

Points to it
If the motor-specific spindle parameters in the controller do not accurately reflect the installed spindle motor model, the amplifier may attempt to drive the motor incorrectly, leading to an overcurrent condition.
Check
Compare the current spindle parameters in the CNC with the specifications of the installed motor model and the machine builder's parameter backup. This is especially relevant if the motor was recently replaced or parameters reloaded.

3Spindle amplifier fault

Points to it
If the motor and cable insulation test good and the spindle parameters are confirmed to be correct, the spindle amplifier itself may be faulty, causing it to incorrectly detect or generate an overcurrent.
Check
If the previous checks confirm the motor and parameters are good, replace the spindle amplifier according to FANUC's recommended procedure.

Next check: Start by checking the insulation status of the spindle motor and its power cable. Disconnect them from the amplifier and perform an insulation test, looking for any signs of damage or coolant ingress.

Work on fuel trains, burners, pressure vessels and electrical equipment must be done by qualified personnel following the manufacturer’s documentation and local codes. Never bypass a safety device or interlock.
