WEG CFW500 trips F0074 at start or while running, what to check?
My WEG CFW500 inverter is tripping on F0074 (Ground Fault) either right at startup or sometimes while the motor is running. I've seen it alternate with F0070 once or twice. What should I check first?
Fault F0074 on a WEG CFW500 inverter indicates a ground overcurrent, meaning an overcurrent from an output phase to ground (PE). This protection acts instantly in hardware to cut output pulses. It can occur at start or while running if an output phase shorts to ground, or with long motor cables due to current peaks from cable capacitance. This fault is distinct from F0070, which signifies an overcurrent between output phases.
Likely causes and checks
1Short circuit to ground in output phases
- Points to it
- A short circuit between one or more output phases and ground is a common cause for F0074. This is particularly likely if the fault occurs at startup or when moisture or physical damage affects the motor or cable.
- Check
- Disconnect the motor from the inverter. Perform an insulation test on both the motor and the motor cable to ground.
2High motor cable capacitance
- Points to it
- Long motor cables can lead to high cable capacitance, causing current peaks that trigger the F0074 fault, even if insulation tests are good.
- Check
- Verify the length and type of the motor cable against the specifications in the CFW500 user's manual.
Next check: After checking for a short circuit to ground in the motor and cable, if the insulation tests are good but the fault persists, investigate the motor cable length and type for excessive capacitance.
