Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 fault OB86: Rack error (station or IO system failure)
The operating system calls OB86 when the failure of a DP master system or PROFINET IO system is detected, when a DP slave or IO device fails or returns, and when some submodules of a PROFINET I-device fail. Event_Class 16#39 is the failure (incoming), 16#38 the return. On the S7-1500 the default reaction if OB86 is not configured is to ignore the event: the CPU stays in RUN while the station’s I/O is unavailable. On S7-300/400, a missing OB86 puts the CPU in STOP.

When it happens
- RUN, when a PROFINET device or DP slave drops off the network
- On the device’s return (outgoing event)
Likely causes and checks
1Network interruption (cable, connector, switch port)
- Points to it
- Fault_ID 16#CB (PROFINET IO device failure/return), often repeating; port statistics show errors.
- Check
- Check the cabling, connectors and switch ports on the path to the device; read the PROFINET port diagnostics.
2Device lost power
- Points to it
- Device failure coincides with a supply event; device LEDs off.
- Check
- Check the device’s 24 V supply and its protection.
3Device name, IP or configuration mismatch after replacement
- Points to it
- Device returns with Fault_ID 16#CD or 16#CE (preset/actual configuration difference or module configuration error).
- Check
- Compare the device name, address and modules with the project configuration.
Telling it apart
- OB86 is the whole station or IO system; a single module pulled or not responding inside a working station is OB83, and a channel fault is OB82.
- Repeated failure/return pairs point to an intermittent network or supply problem rather than a dead device.
- Because the CPU stays in RUN without OB86, the program must handle the lost inputs; check what the process does when the station’s I/O is missing.
Evidence to collect
- Diagnostics buffer export with failure and return times
- OB86 start information (LADDR, Event_Class, Fault_ID)
- PROFINET topology and port diagnostics
- Device name and IP of the failed device
- Device supply measurement
Work on fuel trains, burners, pressure vessels and electrical equipment must be done by qualified personnel following the manufacturer’s documentation and local codes. Never bypass a safety device or interlock.
