GA500 oH Heatsink Overheat: what to check first?
My GA500 drive is tripping on an oH fault, Heatsink Overheat, when running a heavy load. It seems to happen more often in the summer. What should I check first?
The GA500 oH fault indicates the heatsink temperature has exceeded the level set in L8-02. This often points to high ambient temperatures, insufficient cooling, or a heavy load. The drive will stop as configured by L8-03 when this fault occurs.
Likely causes and checks
1Ambient or panel temperature too high
- Points to it
- High ambient temperatures or poor panel ventilation can cause the heatsink to overheat, especially during warmer periods or if other heat-generating equipment is nearby. Dust or unwanted materials can also decrease cooling capacity.
- Check
- Measure the ambient temperature around the drive. Improve panel airflow or install a cooling device like a fan or air conditioner. Ensure proper installation space and remove any obstructions to air circulation.
2Internal cooling fan stopped or obstructed
- Points to it
- A stopped or noisy internal cooling fan will prevent proper heat dissipation from the heatsink. An earlier LT-1 cooling fan maintenance alarm would also indicate this issue.
- Check
- Check if the fan is turning and listen for unusual noises. If the fan is not working, replace it according to the manual and then reset the fan operation time by setting o4-03 = 0. Also, examine the drive for dust or materials that could clog the fan.
3Load too heavy
- Points to it
- Operating the drive under a consistently heavy load for extended periods can generate excessive heat, leading to the heatsink overheating.
- Check
- Measure the output current of the drive. If it is consistently high, consider decreasing the load on the motor.
4Carrier frequency high
- Points to it
- A high carrier frequency (C6-02) can increase heat generation in the drive, even if it's set to reduce motor noise.
- Check
- Check the setting for C6-02 [Carrier Frequency Selection]. If it has been raised, try decreasing it to a lower value.
Next check: Start by measuring the ambient temperature around the drive and inspecting the panel for proper ventilation and any obstructions. Also, check the internal cooling fan for operation and cleanliness.
