Hydraulic Power Unit Oil Temperature Rising: What to Check?

Question

Our hydraulic power unit's oil temperature keeps climbing throughout the shift, even though the cooler seems to be running. I've checked the oil level, and it's good. What else should I be looking for?

A rising hydraulic oil temperature often indicates that energy is being converted into heat rather than useful work. This can be due to inefficiencies in the system, such as continuous relief valve operation, issues with the cooling system, or internal component wear leading to excessive leakage.

Likely causes and checks

1Relief Valve Dumping Continuously

Points to it
If the system pressure is constantly at or above the relief valve setting, or if the valve itself is sticking open, hydraulic fluid will be continuously forced through it back to the tank. This creates significant heat without doing work.
Check
Listen for a distinct 'hissing' sound at the relief valve. Use a pressure gauge to monitor system pressure; if it's consistently at the relief valve setting when it shouldn't be, or if the actuator is stalled, this is a strong indicator. Check the valve's pilot line for blockages or incorrect settings.

2Ineffective Oil Cooler

Points to it
Even if the cooler is running, it might not be effectively dissipating heat. This could be due to blockages in the cooler fins (air-cooled) or tubes (water-cooled), a faulty fan/pump, or incorrect flow through the cooler.
Check
For air coolers, check for dirt/debris blocking the fins. For water coolers, check the water flow and temperature differential across the cooler. Verify the cooler's fan or pump is operating correctly and that the oil flow through the cooler is unobstructed. Check for air in the cooling lines if it's a water-cooled system.

3Internal Pump or Motor Leakage

Points to it
Worn internal components in the hydraulic pump or motors can lead to increased internal leakage. This means fluid is bypassing the working components and returning to the tank at pressure, generating heat without performing work.
Check
Measure the case drain flow from the pump and motors. Higher-than-normal flow indicates excessive internal leakage. A sudden increase in noise or vibration from the pump or motors can also be a sign of wear. Compare current performance to baseline data if available.

4Viscosity Issues or Contamination

Points to it
Incorrect oil viscosity (too high or too low for operating temperature) or significant contamination can increase friction and reduce lubrication efficiency, leading to higher operating temperatures.
Check
Take an oil sample for laboratory analysis to check viscosity, contamination levels (particulates, water), and oil degradation. Ensure the correct type and grade of hydraulic oil is being used for the system's operating conditions.

Next check: Isolate and lock out the power unit. Visually inspect the relief valve for any signs of external leakage or damage. If accessible, carefully feel the temperature of the return line near the relief valve and compare it to other return lines to identify excessive heat generation at that point.
