PowerFlex 525 F013 Ground Fault after washdown, what to check?
My PowerFlex 525 drive is tripping on F013 Ground Fault. It happens after washdown, and sometimes when the conveyor cable moves. What should I check first?
A PowerFlex 525 F013 Ground Fault indicates the drive detected a current path to earth ground at one or more of its output terminals. This fault can occur at start, during operation (especially after washdown or cable movement), or intermittently with temperature/humidity changes. It's crucial to disconnect the motor from the drive before performing any megger tests to avoid damaging the drive.
Likely causes and checks
1Damaged motor cable or wet junction box
- Points to it
- Water ingress from washdown or rain, or physical damage from cable movement, can compromise the insulation of the motor cable or wiring within junction boxes, creating a path to ground.
- Check
- Megger the motor cable on its own (with both ends disconnected from the drive and motor). Also, inspect cable glands, conduit, and junction boxes for any signs of water or damage.
2Motor winding insulation breakdown
- Points to it
- Over time, especially if the motor is old, has been wet, or has overheated, the insulation of the motor windings can degrade, leading to a direct path to ground.
- Check
- Disconnect the motor from the drive and megger each phase to ground at the motor terminals.
3Wiring error at the output terminals
- Points to it
- Incorrect wiring or improper routing of the ground conductor at the drive's output terminals can create an unintended ground path.
- Check
- Verify the output terminal wiring and the ground conductor routing against the wiring diagrams in the drive's manual.
Next check: If the F013 fault is accompanied by F012 HW OverCurrent, prioritize testing the insulation of the motor and cable first.
